Uma Ubud, Bali
A 30 room boutique hotel, just outside the center of Ubud and located on a spur of land that offers views down the length of the river valley. Using the foundations of the existing buildings all the upper structures were redesigned and constructed anew and additional facilities added.
All external works were under the landscape architects remit. We replanted the vehicular and pedestrian circulation, adding a car park and large porte cochere to the lobby. Footpaths are in precast paving slabs with leaf imprints. Abandoned rice terraces at the front were turned into a series of flower terraces with a central water channel flowing towards the Lobby. An existing pond, located by the new restaurant was remodeled and a waterfall added, all enclosed by lush planting to create a hidden jungle glade. By contrast the Spa garden is quieter. A calm pond on one side gives a sense of tranquility.
Most rooms have a small private garden leading off the wide verandas. There are 4 suites with plunge pools. These are located at the lower terraces and have the best views.
The 25m swimming pool occupies the central part of the site, between the Lobby and the pool bar, with an overflow along one side. A timber deck outside the bar is shaded by a pergola covered in white Thunbergia grandiflora.
